PIC Rural Information Needs Assessment Survey

Do you work primarily in a rural Colorado county? If so, then we ask you to spend 10-15 minutes to let us know what kinds of substance abuse or health promotion and education information resources are available to you in your area. The purpose of the survey is to assess if there are unmet information needs related to substance abuse and health promotion among rural professionals and their clients in Colorado. Data gathered from this survey will be used to inform the future direction of PIC and any changes that can be made to improve the utility of our statewide resources and services.

New full text databases for PIC library cardholders

We have licensed several new databases that are available to PIC library card holders. Access the full text of, literally, thousands of magazines, journals, and newspapers. As a convenience, we have also provided links to free databases and indexes available on the Web that may be of interest to our clients. Browse our database offerings alphabetically or by subject! PIC goes Statewide!

The PIC collections are now available for free interlibrary loan to libraries in every county of Colorado.

As a new lender on the Colorado StateWide Interlibrary Fast Track (SWIFT) program, professionals throughout the state now have the choice of a) contacting the PIC directly, or b) requesting items from their local public, school, academic, or special library as an interlibrary loan request.

Approximately 400 library systems, districts, and networks will be able to borrow resources for free from the PIC, and many will be able to receive these items via a statewide library courier system, in 2-4 days.

This means any Colorado resident can check PIC and other items out from, and return them to, a library near them.

To take advantage of this service:
1) Ask about interlibrary loans at your nearest library
2) Search the PIC catalog or Colorado Virtual Library, under “Other” library type.
3) Provide your library with a title, author, date of publication and any other pertinent information, and
4) They’ll do the rest!

Access the resources from the library catalog or visit http://preventioncolorado.org. You will need to know your PIC borrower barcode and PIN #. Contact the PIC for help.

New PIC web site and online catalog

The Prevention Information Center (PIC) has launched a new web site and online catalog. In addition to receiving assistance finding reliable health promotion information on the Web or in print, clients can now search library holdings, place requests, and renew their materials online. The site can also be used to access the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP) and PIC Clearinghouses of free posters, brochures, reports, and more. The New RADAR Online Store

As part of CSAP’s Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR) Network, the PIC makes posters, books, flyers, research reports, and other substance abuse information freeley available to Colorado residents. Our new RADAR Clearinghouse store is now open for business at http://www.rmc.org/picStore

As part of our monthly focus, and to support your Children of Alcoholics Week activities, a special February Focus category has been set up containing resources focused on addiction and families.

New PIC Librarian

Dan Lawrence has joined the Rocky Mountain Center as the new librarian for the PIC. His last position was as Instruction Librarian and Asst. Professor of University Libraries at the University of Northern Colorado where he also served as the Criminal Justice bibliographer. He earned his MLS from San Jose State and is completing a Master’s program in Educational Technology and Instructional Design. Dan brings a wealth of experience in managing collections, document delivery services, and library technology applications to the Center.
